HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It is a virus that attacks the immune system, specifically the CD4 cells (T cells), which help the immune system fight off infections. HIV can be transmitted through contact with certain body fluids, such as blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and breast milk. It is most commonly transmitted through unprotected sexual intercourse, sharing needles or syringes with someone who is infected, or from an HIV-positive mother to her child during childbirth or breastfeeding.
If left untreated, HIV can progress to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), a condition in which the immune system is severely damaged and cannot effectively fight off infections and diseases. However, with early diagnosis and proper treatment, people with HIV can live long and healthy lives. Anti-retroviral therapy (ART) is the standard treatment for HIV, which involves taking a combination of medications that can suppress the virus and keep it at undetectable levels in the body.
There is currently no cure for HIV, but research and advancements in treatment have significantly improved the outlook for people living with the virus. Prevention is key in stopping the spread of HIV, and this includes practicing safe sex, using condoms, getting tested regularly, using clean needles, and providing access to education and resources for high-risk populations.
